Help for Rindge Students

What are my borrowing privileges at the library?
Information on borrowing privileges is located on the Circulation page.
How do I find course reserve materials?
Course reserve materials are located at the Circulation Desk in the Library. You will need your ID in order to check them out, whether for in-library use only or for overnight use. Reserve materials may be searched in the online catalog. Click Research and then Search Our Catalog. Just look up your course or your instructor’s name.
Items on eReserve (or electronic Reserve) are available through our web page. If you would like more information, ask at Circulation.
Can I do word processing in the Library?
Our public workstations just have Wordpad and Notepad on them, so your ability to word process in the Library is currently limited. We hope to expand capabilities in the coming year. If you have a document on a USB memory device, you can print it out at any workstation in the Library. Ask for assistance in turning off the printed workstation number.
How do I print something out in the Library?
On any of the public workstations, the printer closest will automatically be selected. If you are using your own computer in the library, just select the printer you’d like to use: librarypat or groupstudy. Directions are posted in the group study rooms and in the foyer to that area.
Which database should I use to find articles on my topic?
If you are unsure what database to use, Research Guides are geared to different topic areas.. Descriptions of each database are also available, click on Research and then Academic Databases, then click on the Show/Hide Descriptions button at the top of the page. If you would like additional guidance, just Ask a Librarian.
How do I use library databases from off campus?
All of the databases are searchable from off-campus. The list of academic databases can be accessed from the Research page. A box will appear asking you to login. Use your FP network login to access databases from off-campus.
Would I be able to set up an exhibit in one of the cases in the Library?
If your club, organization, or department is interested in mounting an exhibit, please contact the Director of Library Services for scheduling and more information.
I need scholarly sources for a paper. What does that mean?
The library offers an Academic Support Guide on determining a scholarly source. If you would like additional guidance, please Ask a Librarian.
How do I find a particular magazine or journal?
There are potentially three steps in finding a magazine or journal:
  1. Click on Research. You will see a search box that says Journal Title begins with. Search for the title of the journal (Journal of the Early Republic as opposed to the topic or article title). If it's available online, you should be able to click through a list of dates to get to a list of all the full-text articles from the particular issue you need, and then email, print, or skim the article.
  2. If it's not available online, click on Research and Search Our Catalog. Type the title of the journal in the Find search, choose search type Title and click "Search". Check to make sure the year that you need is available. The journals, magazines, and newspapers are shelved downstairs in alphabetical order by journal title. If you have trouble locating a title, please ask for assistance at Reference or click on Ask a Librarian.
  3. If it's not available in print, either, you may need to fill out an Interlibrary Loan form. We recommend that you ask a librarian for help with this, because sometimes we will notice things about an article that will make you less likely to want to obtain the article, so that you can focus your searching on more productive resources.
May I eat in the Library?
Non-alcoholic drinks in capped containers & snack foods are allowed in study areas. Please limit meals to the kitchenette on the lower level. See About the Library for policies or ask at the Circulation desk.
Where can I find a map of the layout of the library?
A map of the library can be found on the More About the Library page, click Floorplan to download the PDF.
Can I see a list of items that I have checked out?
Yes. Click on My Account, located in the header on the top of each page.
How do I renew library materials?
From the top of any webpage, click on My Account. There is a renewal option.
Can you tell me when an item I’m waiting for is returned?
Sure! Just contact Circulation staff and we’ll put the item on hold for you. Call 603/899-4140 or email the Library.
I need a data projector for a class presentation. How do I reserve that?
To better coordinate classroom requests, we will only accept equipment reservations from faculty members. If students need a computer and/or a projector for classroom presentations, the appropriate faculty member must make the reservation. If the user is providing the computer, we recommend scheduling a rehearsal at least 72 hours in advance to ensure the compatibility of the computer and projector. If this rehearsal is not scheduled, or the user fails to attend, we cannot guarantee that the equipment will work properly in the classroom. We have also found that e-mailing the presentation to us in advance is a good way to eliminate most last minute problems. See our page on Media Services and Instructional Technology for more information.
How do I cite an article or a website?
Click on Research and then Academic Support Guides for more information about citing. If you need additional guidance, click on Ask a Librarian.
A librarian created a webpage specifically for our class. Where will I find it?
Click on Research and then see the list of classes under Library Instruction Program.
Are there any jobs open at the Library for FP students?
Current job openings are listed at About the Library under More About the Library. You may also contact library employees directly. Library personnel are listed on the About the Library page.
Does the library offer chat/IM Reference?
Click on Ask a Librarian for all the details.
May I keep library materials over a break?
Most likely. Contact Circulation staff and we’ll check for any conflicts. Call 603/899-4140 or email Circulation.
I’d like to suggest that the Library buy a particular item.
There are forms you can fill out located at the Circulation Desk. Our policy is located on the Collection Development page. See the Suggestions for Acquisition section.
I have some library fines or fees. What are they for?
Click on My Account on the top of any page or contact Circulation staff and we’ll check on the details. Call 603/899-4140. We charge $3/day for late videos and we charge for a flat fee for replacement of unreturned items plus a processing fee.
How do I connect to the network using my laptop in the Library?
The Library is a wireless hotspot on campus. Set your laptop to find wireless networks and then select FP Faculty or Staff. Contact the IT department as needed.

Your current FP ID card will allow you to check circulating materials out yourself at other New Hampshire College and University Council (NHCUC) member libraries (with the exception of Dartmouth College). See our NHCUC page to search other NHCUC libraries’ catalogs.

Help for Local Resident

I live in the area. Can I get a library card?
Residents of towns within a fifteen-mile radius of the Rindge campus are extended borrowing privileges but are not accorded interlibrary loan services. Local borrowers must present their Franklin Pierce College Library cards; or, in the first instance, a valid local driver's license. For more information, click on About the Library and then Circulation. You will see an application for borrowing privileges and a brochure outlining our services.
How many items may I check out?
Local residents may have 10 items checked out at any one time.
My child would like a library card. Is that possible?
Yes. Minors may apply for library cards at the Circulation Desk, but a parent’s identification and signature is necessary as we require acceptance of financial responsibility for borrowed materials. Please be aware that we do not restrict access or borrowing based on content or ratings. We do ask that children be accompanied in the Library.
I am a teacher. I would like to bring my class to the Library.
We would be pleased to have you visit. As a courtesy, please call ahead to make sure a visit would not conflict with quiet study during exams or any events at the Library. While we do not provide library instruction for visiting school groups, you are welcome to Ask a Librarian ahead of time for some guidance or acclimation to our collection. Please note that we do not loan directly to students unless we have an arrangement with the school or local borrower applications have been completed. For more information about borrowing privileges, click on About the Library and then Circulation. See the section on Local Residents.

Are you able to guide me in my research?
Our primary commitment is to students, faculty, and staff at Franklin Pierce. Your local school or public library may be a more appropriate source of support. However, if a librarian is available and time permits, we will be glad to assist you on site. Stop in!
Do you accept donations?
